Niagara Ice Wine Festival -- 2007

Looking out our window at Riverbend Inn we see freshly fallen snow around the gazebo and Peller Estates Winery on the far side of a vineyard. January 23, 2007
Another view of Peller Estates Winery from the grounds of Riverbend Inn. They won't be making ice wine from these vines... all the grapes were picked earlier in the season. January 23, 2007
Even the partially snow-covered statue of Bacchus, the roman god of wine and debauchery, knows that this is the perfect weather for harvesting grapes to make ice wine... evenings of minus 9 to 15 Celsius. January 23, 2007
Margaret-Ann seems eager to sample a flight of Vidal and Reisling ice wines at Chateau de Charmes Winery. January 24, 2007
Outside the Iniskellen Winery, Margaret-Ann poses beside some ice art. January 24, 2007

A close-up of the ice art reveals a bunch of grapes frozen in a block of ice. January 24, 2005

Peller Estates Winery is one of the larger ones in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with a very upscale (i.e., expsensive) restaurant. July 24, 2007

Looking from the Peller Estates Winery across a vinyard at the Riverbend Inn on the Niagara River Parkway. Our room was on the second floor just to the left of the gazebo (click on the photo to view an enlargement). January 24, 2007
At night we viewed Gordon Halloran's "Paintings Below Zero" outdoor exhibit at the Shaw Festival Theatre. Amazing! These slabs of ice were created and placed on a refrigerated platform measuring about 8 x 15 feet. A similar platform was created at the far end of the exhibit about 70 feet away. January 24, 2007

A series of refrigerated pipes, representing grapevines, connected the two platforms of slab ice. Gordon Holloran also had a major exhibit at the Torino Olympics. To see more of his work, check out his website at www.paintingsbelowzero.com. January 24, 2007
What a difference a day makes! Overcast and snowing with a wind chill temperature of minus 24 degrees Celsius on the morning of our trip home. Here we stop to take a picture at the mouth of the Niagara River as it empties into Lake Ontario. That's Fort Niagara across the river on the American side. On a clear day you can see the Toronto skyline just to the left of the gazebo. Not a chance today. January 25, 2007

On our way out of Niagara-on-the-Lake we stop to take a picture of Trisha Romance's gallery. A wonderful artist! We own several of her prints. Check out her website at www.romancecollection.com. January 25, 2007

Just a sample of the liquid gold -- ice wine -- we brought back from the festival. We also brought back a couple of bottles of 2002 Merlot from Vineland Estates. These are every bit the equal of the 2002 Jackson Triggs' Delaine Estates Merlot and, I can't promise, but there's an outside chance we could bring a bottle with us when we visit Dennis and Val this fall in Canmore.
