Europe 2013 – Day 7

August 29th – Germersheim, Speyer

Weather – sunny and warm.

The S.S. Antoinette sailed up the Rhine overnight and arrived in Germersheim at 8:00 a.m. After breakfast, Margaret-Ann and John boarded a bus for the short trip to Speyer for their guided walking tour of the old town that included the thousand year-old Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral -- the largest Romanesque-styled church in the world).

They had planned to meet Rudi, John’s cousin, and his wife, Barbara, at 12:30; however, they actually met them around 11:30 outside the Cathedral and together they completed the walking tour.

The group had lunch in a wonderful beer garden and spent the rest of the afternoon strolling through Speyer. Margaret-Ann ended up buying a pair of high heeled shoes for 5 euros!

At 5:00 p.m., after a wonderful day, Margaret-Ann and John bid Rudi and Barbara a fond farewell and boarded the last shuttle bus back to the ship. Rudi and Barbara drove and hour and a half back home to Idar-Oberstein.

The S.S. Antoinette remained docked at Germersheim until 10:30 p.m., then left for Kehl.
