15 Celsius and Cloudy
This is the ninth of twenty posts documenting Margaret-Ann and John’s 2011 trip to Europe.
After breakfast Margaret-Ann, John, Barbara and Rudi took the train (two transfers and all three trains were exactly on time) to Koblenz, this year’s host city for BUGA (the federal horticultural festival).
Once in Koblenz the group took a short cruise: travelling a short way up the Rhine to Schloss Stolzenfels then back to the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) where the Moselle River joins the Rhine.
Back on land, the group had lunch at Augusta’s then took the cable car across the Rhine to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the second oldest fortress in Europe – the oldest being at Gibraltar). The cable car ride to and from the fortress was quite exasperating, with crowd control being a major challenge.
The train trip back to Idar-Oberstein took only one transfer (again, both trains were right on time) and once back at Barbara and Rudi’s, before dinner, Margaret-Ann and John had a short conversation with their children, Meredith and Jeremy, on Skype.
And so ended day nine of Margaret-Ann and John’s 2011 European trip. Keep checking the blog for more postings of this trip.
