Europe Day 17 – September 5th

33 Celsius and Mostly Sunny with Thunderstorm

This is the seventeenth of twenty posts documenting Margaret-Ann and John’s 2011 trip to Europe.

Another hot day in Vienna began with the group having breakfast at Oberlaa konditoreie, a delightful place Waltraud and Sonny discovered in the two days they were in Vienna before the rest of the group arrived.

Leaving Oberlaa, the group walked through the Stadtpark (City Park) and had the obligatory pictures taken with the statue of Johann Strauss behind the mid 19th century Kurslalon. They continued on to the magnificent Karlskirche before boarding the hop-on-hop-off tour bus, driving by a number of sites including the Prater with the world famous Wiener Riesenrad (ferris wheel) in the Wurstelprater amusement park.

The group left the bus for ice cream and sachertorte at Café de l’Europe, then re-boarded and rode out to Schönbrunn Palace and, during a bit of a thunder storm, toured the massive royal gardens, stopping at the Gloriette at the far end of the gardens for a wonderful view of the palace and city.
It was a short walk to the picturesque Schönbrunn U-Bahn station and back to the hotel to freshen up before venturing out again to dine at Frauenhuber, Vienna's oldest coffee house; where John sampled another sachertorte for dessert and Margaret-Ann tried the topfenstrudel.

And so ended day seventeen of Margaret-Ann and John’s 2011 European trip. Keep checking the blog for more postings of this trip.
